Denotation and Connotation

This is the advert of Avril Lavigne's latest perfume called "Black Star". As you can see, the main objects in this ad is Avril herself and the product, which is the perfume. The main colour theme is Pink and Black, connoting 'punk' culture. AS we already know, Avril is a punk, maybe that's why she named the the perfume Black Star as a way of representing herself as punk star.

Low Angle Shot - Worm's Eye view

This shot is from the film 'Slumdog Millionaire'. This shows Jamal Malik (main character) receiving the cheque of Million rupees from the Indian version of 'Who Wants To Be a Millionaire'. This is a Low Angle shot or a worm's eye view shot, as it is shown from a lower angle than the characters in the picture as if we are looking up to them, which I think shows a sign of victory, in this case the main character has won the show. There is also colourful confetti falling from the ceiling which again shows victory. The facial expression of the main character tells us that he is shocked and speechless as the character has his mouth opened.

Extreme Close-Up

This is a shot from the film 'The Ring'. This is the English version of the Japanese film 'The Ring' and it is a horror movie. This extreme close-up of a ghost named Samara shows the revenge in the creepy blue eyes. The jet black hair covering parts of the face makes the whole picture a lot more horrifying. The main colours in this image is black and blue-like-white which gives it a dark and unknown and mysterious feeling.

High Angle shot

This shot is from the film 'Night in the Museum'. This is a high angle shot as it shows the the scene from a higher point. The main character(who is being carried away) is being carried away by 'wild' people in a humorous way, this tells us that this film is a comedy genre or it HAS comedy in it. The facial expression(even thought we can't see it properly) of the main character shows us that he is uncomfortable and scared. The costume of the main character tells us that he might be a security guard or police officer.

Long Shot

This Shot is from the film 'Hannah Montana:The Movie'. This is a Long Shot as it shows the character full length and it shows some of the surroundings. We can see the character standing in the middle of a road as if she is ready to go with her suitcases. By looking at this shot we can vaguely make out the film genre, as the characters costume(especially that wig!) shows us it has something to do with music and pop stars. As we can see the character is the main focus here, because the background is blurred out, because of the green background we can say it is somewhere like a countryside rather than in a city filled with skyscrapers. The facial expression of the character shows us that she may be talking to someone standing in a distance to her.

Medium Shot

This shot is from a film called 'The Waterboy'. This shot is a mid-shot and is intended to show a little bit of the characters' surroundings, as we can see the main character is sitting behind a typical American school/high school desk(now we know it's set in a typical American school). His facial expression tells us that he is kind of weird and a humorous character, which tells me that this film is a comedy film. The light effect used this shot is flat(ordinary) and gives us no particular feeling when we look at it, other than the characters face(which shows a little bit of humour).

Close-Up

This shot is from the horror film 'Shrooms'. The shot is a close-up shot as it shows the characters face and its expression clearly. I can see that the genre of this film is horror just by looking at it, because of the facial expression of the character. There is also difference in the colour, as it is dark and almost as if something bad is about to happen... The ghostly figure behind the character somewhat makes the whole picture creepier because it is shown as a blur rather than a sharp figure, making us think its a ghost/spirit.
